Halloween is getting popular in Japan.

Here is a little girl dressed up in Minnie Mouse in front of a Machiya.

We are so fortunate being supported by many people and are always trying to improve the quality of the machiya.

On the 1st day of the long weekend, we went to visit our cousins at their rice dumpling store, KOTOKA, close to Kyoto Imperial Palace and Shimogamo Shrine, one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites.

If you have a chance to go to Shimogamo Shrine or Kyoto Imperial Palace, we highly recommend to go to their place.

MITARASHI DUMPLINGS are served in a sweet soy glaze, but they serve ones in SOY SAUCE with Butter and also ones with soybean flour.

I tried SOY SAUCE one for the first time today.

The dumplings with soy sauce were roasted and served with butter… : the taste was much much better than I had expected!!

I believe, the photo on WIKIPEDIA is the MITARASHI DUMPLINGS from my cousins’ store.  Don’t they look delicious?

    Monkeys at Yasaka Koushindo

When you go up the hill to Yasaka Pagoda, you will notice there is a colorful temple on your right.  The temple is called Yasaka Koushindo.

The number of small handmade monkeys are being hung at the temple.

It is said that the monkeys symbolize “desire” and are hold at the temple to control the desire of human beings.

It means that one has to control or hold “ONE” desire for “ONE” prayer to be granted.

You will also realize that there are many stores and houses that have the five monkeys at the entrance way of their stores/houses.

GOEN (Connection in Japanese) and GOEN (Five Monkeys in Japanese) are pronounced the same in Japanese: so by having five monkeys at their house, people hope to have GOOD CONNECTION to HOUSE SAFETY.
